Most of the world’s hard-rock gold is recovered by adsorbing dissolved gold onto activated carbon in CIL (carbon-in-leach), CIP (carbon-in-pulp), or CIC (carbon-in-column) circuits. The carbon has to do two jobs at once: load gold fast from dilute cyanide solution, and survive thousands of abrasion cycles through screens, airlifts, and elution without breaking into fines that carry gold to tailings.
