110 Tons of Pellet Carbon to Saudi Arabia — H₂S Removal for Sour Gas Treatment

We recently completed a 110-ton shipment of coal-based pellet activated carbon to a gas treatment facility in Saudi Arabia. The carbon is KOH-impregnated, built specifically for H₂S removal in sour gas and process gas streams. Here's what the order looked like — specs, packaging, loading, and the desert-climate details that actually matter on a Gulf-bound shipment.

Why KOH-Impregnated Carbon for H₂S

Sour gas in Saudi operations runs high on hydrogen sulfide. H₂S is corrosive and toxic. Left in the stream, it eats away at pipelines, compressors, and downstream equipment, and it's a safety hazard for anyone on site. It has to come out before the gas moves on.

KOH-impregnated pellet carbon is one of the most reliable ways to strip it. The potassium hydroxide coating reacts chemically with H₂S rather than just physically adsorbing it. That chemisorption gives far higher removal capacity per unit volume and a longer bed life than plain carbon — which matters when you're loading a full vessel and don't want to change media every few months.

4mm pellets are the standard choice for fixed-bed H₂S scrubbers. The cylindrical shape gives a low pressure drop across a packed bed and holds up mechanically under the weight of a deep column. For the chemistry behind impregnation grades, see our impregnated activated carbon guide.

H₂S breakthrough capacity is the number that matters most for this application — it tells the customer how much sulfide the bed will hold before it saturates. We test it per ASTM D6646 and report it on the COA for every production lot.

Packaging Built for a Gulf Summer

This is where a Saudi shipment differs from a European one. Cargo lands at Dammam in ambient temperatures that push past 45°C in summer, and it may sit at the port or on a truck for days before it reaches the plant. Moisture control is the whole game — KOH-impregnated carbon is hygroscopic, and if it picks up water in transit its H₂S capacity drops before it ever sees service gas.

For this order we used 500 kg FIBC jumbo bags with a PE inner liner, palletized for stable stacking and forklift handling at the receiving end. Each container got desiccant packs to control humidity during the ocean crossing, and the bags are UV-resistant and double-stitched with crane-rated lifting loops.

We loaded early in the day to keep container internal temperatures down, and recorded the loading temperature on the packing record — standard practice on every Middle East-bound shipment, not something the customer has to ask for.

Loading & Shipping

110 tons split across 5 × 40HQ containers. Bags were palletized at our facility, loaded onto flatbed trucks, and hauled to Tianjin Port for container stuffing. Each container was cross-strapped, inspected, and photographed before sealing.

We handled the full export document set: commercial invoice, packing list, COA per container, MSDS, certificate of origin, and bill of lading. The Saudi market also requires SASO / SABER conformity for imported goods, so we coordinated the Certificate of Conformity (CoC) through an approved body before the vessel sailed — a step that trips up suppliers who haven't shipped to the Kingdom before.

The customer ran our samples against their existing media before committing to the full order. That's the process we recommend — test first, then buy the container. No surprises when 110 tons show up at the plant gate.

We Ship H₂S Removal Carbon Across the Middle East

This Saudi order is one of many. We supply KOH-impregnated and standard pellet carbon to gas processors, refineries, and wastewater facilities across the Gulf — Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Oman. If you're running a desulfurization system and need reliable media, see our overview for activated carbon buyers in the Middle East.

Tell us your gas composition and vessel dimensions and we'll recommend the right grade. Samples ship within 3 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is KOH-impregnated activated carbon used for?

Primarily for removing H₂S from sour gas, biogas, landfill gas, and industrial gas streams. The KOH coating enables chemical adsorption of H₂S, giving significantly higher removal capacity than non-impregnated carbon.

What is the H₂S breakthrough capacity of your pellet carbon?

Our 4mm KOH-impregnated grade delivers ≥0.14 g H₂S per gram of carbon, tested per ASTM D6646. Actual bed life depends on your inlet concentration, gas flow rate, humidity, and vessel size — we help you size the bed once we know your conditions.

Do you handle SASO / SABER conformity for Saudi imports?

Yes. We coordinate the Certificate of Conformity (CoC) through an approved conformity assessment body before shipment, so the cargo clears Saudi customs without hold-ups. This is required for imported goods under the SABER platform.

What is the minimum order quantity for pellet activated carbon?

Our standard MOQ is one 20-foot container (~20 tons). For first-time buyers we can arrange smaller trial orders of 1–5 tons at adjusted pricing. Samples are free.

How long does shipping take from China to Saudi Arabia?

Ocean freight from Tianjin to King Abdulaziz Port (Dammam) takes approximately 25–30 days. Production lead time is typically 2–3 weeks depending on quantity.
